Works by mixed-media artist Hyedee Foreman will be on display Saturday, Feb. 4 during ArtWalk at The Alamo, 318 W. Simcoe St. Also at The Alamo during ArtWalk: handmade jewelry by Jeanee Smith Stone, instrumental music by Sam Rey and catering by Amy Terry.
Before and after the Krewe of Rio rolls down Vermilion Street and crosses Jefferson Saturday evening, the Second Saturday ArtWalk will thrive as the downtown cultural district's galleries, cafés and restaurants open their doors to some of the finest visual art in South Louisiana - all of it exempt from the 4 percent state sales tax. Several of the galleries and exhibit spaces will be showing work with Mardi Gras themes, including an intriguing display of costumes at the Alexandre Mouton House on nearby Lafayette Street.

Vermilion St. / 233-7060 Main Gallery Lost and Found: Louisiana's Landscapes Revisited This show includes works by Philip Gould, Fonville Winons, Robert Polidori, Aubrey Edwards, Lee Deigaard, David Weber, Courtney Egan, David Sullivan, Jessica Bizer, Ralph Bourque, Stephen Frederick, Alexander J. Drysdale, Reggie Rodrigue, Hannah Chalew, Thomas Deaton, Jonathan Ryan, Meghan Fleming, Brandon Ballengée, Rachel Jones, Kathy Reed and Steve Breaux and Luis Cruz Azaceta.
AcA Side Gallery Paintings by Gloria Fiero Fiero taught history, art history and humanities at the University of Louisiana for 27 years, encouraging students to pursue careers in the visual arts and in art history. Since retirement, Fiero divides the year between West New York and New Orleans, with painting studios in both cities. Her paintings are a response to the visual complexity of the Mardi Gras as it is celebrated in south Louisiana. "I see the event from the perspective of one who did not grow up in the culture of the Mardi Gras - as a phenomenon that combines the lavish, colorful aspects of street entertainment and the darker, Dionysian aspects of religious ritual. Arms raised in the traditional orans (prayer or worship) position frequently seen in ancient and medieval art become, in today's Mardi Gras celebrations (and in my paintings), a gesture of supplication for beads and trinkets: the commercialized trivia of contemporary culture. There is between float-riders and street-folks a call-and-response dynamic that is basic to the spirit of these images."

Arts Co-op 535 1/2 Jefferson St. / 344-8657 Interactive body painting with Cully Firmin and company will be featured at both the ArtWalk and on Mardi Gras Day. Other exhibits include Giorgio Russo's mixed media iconographic works, along with his film, Iconographic Process, on the back patio after dark. New featured artists include the paintings and prints of Colleen McDaniel, Victoria Morgan and Tony Bernard, digital and infrared photography by Francis Todd and mixed media glass, copper, wax and acrylic on wood by Bonnie Camos. John Avant will sketch portraits and exhibit his paintings on the sidewalk.
Cajun Spice 535 Jefferson St. / 232-3061 Pam Shensky is featured this month. Shensky describes her art as mirroring life and will showcase her journey through themes she says were academic in college, impressionistic in youth, simplistic in middle age and now presenting what she says is just feel good, positive energy.

Lafayette Science Museum 433 Jefferson St. / 291-5544 "Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries." Museum admission for this exhibit is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Weather permitting, the planetarium will have a telescope near the fountain in Parc Sans Souci in downtown Lafayette for observing Jupiter and other celestial objects from 6-8 p.m. Free.

He and his wife Cindy feel that entertaining is a hallmark of New Orleans, and much of the work at Potsalot is to facilitate and beautify hosting by having a gorgeous piece of pottery from which to serve.
