As cold temperatures drop below the freezing point this week, local Lafayette homeless shelters and aid organizations are gearing up to provide refuge and clothing for transients, dispossesed persons, homeless individuals, and even average dudes wandering around down on their luck or in the dog house. With lows ping-ponging around in the mid-20s and predictions of even lower, possibly record-breaking temperatures later in the week, facilities such as The Salvation Army, St. Joesph Shelter for Men, The Outreach Center, and the Lighthouse Women and Children Shelter are accepting cold weather donations of blankets, hand warmers, hats, gloves, socks, sweaters, boots, and other winter-related items.
If you are interested in donating any of these items, you can do so at the following Lafayette locations:
The Salvation Army 212 Sixth Street 235-2407
St. Joseph Shelter For Men 425 Saint John Street 233-6816
Outreach Center and Lighthouse Women and Children Shelter 625 N. University 289-9141
Women seeking shelter for the evening can go to the Lighthouse between 4-8 p.m. to be admitted. For more information, call the Lighthouse at 289-9141. Men can find shelter by going to the St. Joseph Shelter on St. John or The Salvation Army Center on Sixth street and checking in before 7 p.m..
